The Pennsylvania Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program is designed to provide benefits to blind or disabled adults and children who have limited income and resources. People aged 65 and older without disabilities who meet certain financial requirements are also eligible.
Qualifications require that you have little to no income and few resources. For unmarried individuals, the value of your possessions must be less than $2,000. For married couples the limit is $3,000. The value of your home does not count towards the limit, nor in most cases does your car. Certain other resources, such as burial plots, may not count either.
One of the many benefits of the Pennsylvania SSI program is that the state adds money to the federal SSI payments. If you live in a domiciliary care home or personal care boarding home, the federal and Pennsylvania SSI payments are consolidated into one payment. If you live independently, in a Medicaid facility or in someone else's household, you receive a separate payment from the Pennsylvania SSI.
If you receive SSI, you may also be eligible for other benefits. Most recipients of PA Supplemental Security Income automatically receive Medicaid assistance. Food stamps are also another option since they allow you to buy more food without spending more money. They are helpful for people on SSI by allowing them more options in allocating limited funds.
If you find that you have been denied Supplemental Security Income or feel that the amount you are receiving is lower than what you are eligible for, you have the right to appeal the decision. Having an experienced PA Supplemental Security Income attorney helping you is the best way to ensure that you receive your benefits. A Pennsylvania SSI lawyer will know how take care of you paperwork and can provide help in gathering the necessary medical and financial records -- and help prepare your case for a hearing.
